Yo. I kind of forgot this site existed, for the most part. I just read back through all my old posts, and it’s kind of cute having this super sparse flashbulb-memory of the last decade of my creative life. So I just wanted to check in (“I” being Present-Lachlan in mid-2025) and say hello!
I really don’t feel like writing a thousand words of life-update here. Although I’m also super aware that three years from now these words will be all that exist in the isolated context of this blog, so I’ll say a few things.
- Over the COVID-19 pandemic, I learned a lot more about electronics and 3D-printing. I ended up making a bunch of actually-finished self-contained gadgets – some of which I still use daily. I also taught myself modern web development, which ended up completely changing how I approach computers and programming.
- After the lockdowns, I shipped Gondwana VR, which was a whole thing. On the upside, it was selected for all the film-festivals and has been exhibiting around Australia and the world on-and-off ever since. On the downside, the burnout that it caused in me (for a variety of complex reasons) almost ended my career and left me basically unable to work for almost a year.
- While continuing to work in the Melbourne scene as a creative technologist , I spent a few years increasing my electronics and web skills – making a number of relatively serious side-projects along the way. The most important of which is Weeklog, which the last post on this blog was about. This is where I’ve been posting basically every day ever since. If you want to know details about what I’ve made since 2020, it’s all there.
- In mid 2024 I moved to London to take a job that I came across by pure chance and was exactly perfect for me: XR Prototyper at Liquid City. In practice, I’m more a kind of senior engineer. I was pretty unsure as to whether I’d enjoy working full-time again, but it’s been great! We’ve made some really cool stuff that I’m pretty proud of. It’s been a bit of a revelation that it is, in fact, fun to work with cool, inspiring people!
- I’ve gotten pretty into LLMs and the design of conversational interfaces. It’s become a pretty major part of what I do at Liquid City and takes up a lot of my spare thinking time.
- Working with technology against a backdrop of growing scarcity, mass-surveillance, authoritarianism and war has come to feel increasingly morally complex. The material realities of my financial situation give me no easy choice but to find the good in it as best as I can.
So yeah, that’s the last 5 years in short (since my 2023 post didn’t actually contain any about the 2020-2023 period). I have been thinking lately that I want to get back into actually writing rather than relying on the formless rants of Weeklog to transmit myself into the internet. So maybe I’ll make some more posts here before 2028. Maybe.
